Characteristics of stainless steel

Stainless steel types are made from alloys (metal mixtures) of certain amounts of iron, chromium, nickel, and carbon. Additional metals can be added if certain properties are desired.

The addition of nickel and chromium makes the material easier to machine, stronger at high temperatures, and more resistant to corrosion. If chromium comes into contact with oxygen, an invisible oxide layer forms to protect the underlying metal from rusting, resulting in high corrosion resistance.
